MongoDB (MDB) is a stock that I bought after using their product. Specifically, I had done a development project and had used MongoDB on my home server. Then I wanted to deploy my code to run 24/7 and I didn’t want to commit to keeping my server online all of the time like that. This led me to look into MongoDB Atlas and I loved it. First of all, it was a delight to migrate my database to Atlas. Next, updating my code was trivially easy. And my favorite part: MongoDB Atlas was usage-based which meant that if I didn’t execute any queries, I didn’t have any charges outside of a very reasonably priced storage amount. This was amazing for me because it meant that I didn’t need to put our limited resources into a database that may or may not be used. I didn’t have to worry about how many people might hit our website and I also knew that it was being handled on the backend. MongoDB continues to do great on the P&L but it is a company that is very volatile. I will keep holding as long as they keep supporting the usage-based model. I believe that model aligns them with their customers really well and is why they keep growing the number of $100k customers that they have.
